Today we got Ava's bone marrow biopsy results from last Saturday. Her marrow showed only 6% of her own cells, that means 94% were Audrey's cells!! This is considered good news. The doctors would really like to see 100% of donor (Audrey) cells in the marrow, and explained that in the next couple months we may see an increase. Now it really gets confusing...there was a blood test done that checked Ava's lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are small white blood cells that help defend the body against diseases and are responsible for immune responses (also called leukocytes). Her results showed that 50% were her own and 50% were Audrey's. Apparently it is ok to have a mixture here, its less chance of having GVHC (graft versus host disease). She actually has more chance of GVHC with the higher number of donor cells...what?? I find this confusing because I thought we would want 100% of donor cells, but having a small amount of her own helps. They actually do hope to see some increase here, and will periodically check throughout the following months. Her own cells and donor cells can co-exist and work if they get along... Ava always had healthy white cells. Right now she has 2 immune systems working together and may forever. The main focus is that her platelets are rising and producing normally right now, something they had never done on their own!! Thank you Audrey Mae!!
Please don't ever show a doctor what Im writing, because I really have no idea...it just sounds right.
That was our good news for today. Also, found it funny today that when Ava and I were taking our daily walk around our neighborhood, I looked up and right there on the sidewalk next to us was her doctor!! He was going for a haircut! I so badly wanted him to reiterate today's appointment but Im pretty sure that would not have been an appropriate time so instead I just said "hi" and left him alone...I guess he has a life outside the hospital.
Our focus for the weekend is to get Ava to eat! Eating means no TPN, no TPN means no line hanging out of her, and based on some other factors, she could possibly go home in a couple weeks!! Fingers crossed!
